چکیده

Biomass co-firing is becoming a promising solution to reduce CO2 emissions, due to its renewability and carbon neutrality. Biomass normally has high moisture and volatile contents, complicating its combustion behaviour, which is significantly different from that of coal. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model of a single biomass particle is developed in this work, to predict the mass loss properties and temperature profile during the biomass devolatilization and combustion processes, by solving the energy and mass transport equations. The biomass devolatilization reaction was simulated by a two-competing-rate model and the biomass char burnout rate was controlled by both kinetics and diffusion to predict the particle size changes. The resulting predicted temperature profiles show good agreement with experimental data. The results also shed light on the effects of biomass particle size, air temperature and oxygen concentrations on biomass particle combustion behaviour. © 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Characterization of organic aerosol produced during pulverized coal combustion in a drop tube furnace

Controlled bench scale pulverized coal combustion studies were performed, demonstrating that inorganic particles play a critical role as carriers of organic species. Two commonly-used aerosol mass spectrometry techniques were applied to characterize fine particle formation during coal combustion. It was found that the organic species in coal combustion aerosols have mass spectra similar to thos...

A Model for Nitrogen Chemistry in Oxy-Fuel Combustion of Pulverized Coal

In this work, a model for the nitrogen chemistry in the oxy-fuel combustion of pulverized coal has been developed. The model is a chemical reaction engineering type of model with a detailed reaction mechanism for the gas-phase chemistry, together with a simplified description of the mixing of flows, heating and devolatilization of particles, and gas solid reactions. The model is validated by co...

Three-dimensional Modelling on the Hydrodynamics of a Circulating Fluidised Bed

The rapid depletion of oil and the environmental impact of combustion has motivated the search for clean combustion technologies. Fluidised bed combustion (FBC) technology works by suspending a fuel over a fast air inlet whilst sustaining the required temperatures. Using biomass or a mixture of coal/biomass as the fuel, FBC provides a low-carbon combustion technology whilst operating at low tem...

Combustion Characteristics of Single Particles from Bituminous Coal and Pine Sawdust in O2/N2, O2/CO2, and O2/H2O Atmospheres

Burning fuels in an O2/H2O atmosphere is regarded as the next generation of oxy-fuel combustion for CO2 capture and storage (CCS). By combining oxy-fuel combustion and biomass utilization technology, CO2 emissions could be further reduced. Therefore, this work focuses on investigating the combustion characteristics of single particles from bituminous coal (BC) and pine sawdust (PS) in O2/N2, O2...

Stereoscopic Camera-Based Investigation of Pulverized Solid Fuel Combustion - particle temperature, shape and burning rates

A newly developed stereoscopic camera system has been applied to measure the temperature, size and shape of burning coal and biomass particles in a lab-scale laminar flow reactor. The stereoscopic imaging method enables to measure the particle contour which can be used to determine the shape of the particle. As the camera system is constructed for two-color pyrometry, the simultaneous detection...
